Exhibitions of the Shrine of Fátima:

"Fátima Luz e Paz" - Fatima Light and Peace

A bit of history on exhibition

Gifts which pilgrims in the course of time have been presenting to Our Lady are  now on view, since the beginning of August 2002, under the title ‘Fatima Light and Peace’, in the rectory building of the Shrine of Fatima. The expectations created about this space of exhibition are the most varied, but I imagine hat the great majority thought it meant “an exhibition of Shrine gold”.  It is evident that such an idea changes completely, when one can see “with eyes to see” what has been prepared for the past years and now can be visited.

The articles exhibited are of the most varied order, from the crown of Our Lady to the gilts of Pope John Paul II, passing through wedding dresses, a bicycle, a football jersey or even some wax figure. But whoever enters this space cannot just see a show of beautiful articles. The photography at thebe beginning of the exhibition inserts us at once into a social surrounding that prevailed at the time of the apparitions: Word War I.

Another piece of great symbolic richess exposed in this exhibition is the ring donated by John Paul II.
After addressing a prayer of praise to the Virgin, in the Little Chapel of Apparitions, on May 12, 2000, the Holy Father donated a ring to Our Lady, together with a written message, which we now transcribe:
"This ring, with the effigy of Our Lady and the words ´Totus Tuus´, was given to me by Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, on the first days of my Pontificate. It is with great joy that I donate it now to Our Lady of Fátima as a sign of my deepest gratitude for the protection She has granted me."

Afterwards our attention is drawn not only to the objects exhibited but also to the message that accompanies them, and this is of the utmost importance for the understanding of the content of what we are seeing. There are thousands of articles, small and big, of great value, for each and all of them were offered by people known or unknown, by ordinary poor or socially important people. Truly significant is the fact that each article has a history that reflects the life history of the one who offered it and which is known only to himself and to God. This exhibition is the work of thousands and thousands of pilgrims who in Fatima and in its message seek and find a little Light and Peace which emanate from God and which Mary communicates here in Fatima.

Museum-House of Aljustrel

Aljustrel is one of the oldest villages of the parish of Fátima, having acquired particular importance after 1917, for Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, to whom the Blessed Mother appeared, were born here and spent their childhood here.
At the beginning of the century it was a little place consisting of 25 families, about 100 inhabitants, who lived from farming and shepherding. From the dry, arid and stony soil they drew, with a lot of sweat, their daily bread.
At nightfall, the who1e family gathered together around the fireplace to have supper and give thanks to God.

From the book
"Aljustrel, uma Aldeia de Fátima"

The primitive building where the museum is installed now, possibly goes back to the 17th century.
In 1880, this rural house belonged to José Pedro Marto, who left it to his daughter, Maria Rosa, the godmother of the seer Lúcia. Maria Rosa married José Henriques. This simple and good-hearted farmer taught here many youths and adults to read and write in his sparetime at night.
In 1969, the building being completely dilapidated, it was acquired and reconstructed by the "Sociedade de Empreendimentos de Fátima - SETIMA", which installed various collections of the local ethnografy.
Presently, the museum aims at showing what life in the village was like in the past.
It was opened 10 the public on August 19, 1992.

Fátima in the world

In an underground hall of the Most Holy Trinity Church, the exhibition ‘Fatima in the World’ exhibits photographs of shrines, churches and chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima in all five Continents.

This exhibition also shows to the public a road map of shrines and churches as seen from space (satellite images), courtesy of Google Earth, where you can notice some of the temples shown in the photos.

 Admission is free.

"Via Lucis"

Inaugurated on June 2, 2008, the exhibition ‘Via Lucis’ (Way of Light) was donated to the Shrine by the Italian Catholic lay group ‘Witnesses to the Risen One’ and was installed in the hall between the Chapel of the Resurrection and the Chapel of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, in the Reconciliation Zone of the Most Holy Trinity Church Complex.

It consists of fourteen pictures by Italian artist Vanni Rinaldi.

The pictures show the Mystery of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, from the moment of Resurrection to the day of Pentecost, when the Risen One sends to the disciples the promised Holy Spirit.

Free Admission.

“Jacinta Marto: candle lighted by God”

In the year when the Shrine of Fatima turns to the figure of Jacinta Marto and takes her as a special model, the Department of Art and Patrimony (part of SESDI – Department of Research and Information) is preparing an exhibition on this important figure of the history and message of Fatima. With this exhibition there concludes the project begun last year when various objects of the historical, artistic, documental and bibliographical patrimony on the figure of Blessed Francisco Marto were exhibited.

In an underground hall of the Most Holy Trinity Church until October 2010. Free Admission.

"The Bishop dressed in white: The Popes and Fatima"

The Shrine of Fatima opened to the public on March 27, 2010, in one of the spaces of the Complex of Most Holy Trinity Church, a documental exhibition which will recall the papal visits to this Shrine. The initiative’s purpose is to recall, in the year Pope Benedict XVI visits Fatima, the different visits in which the Roman Pontiffs turned pilgrims of Our Lady of Fatima.

Free Admission.
